It was another pivotal event in the string of incidents characterizing the modern history of the two peoples, which started with the Zionist movement of the late 1800s. But each sides claim to the land is much older, dating back to Biblical times. Now many Palestinians are as the Jews were until the creation of Israel in 1948: people without a nation of their own. They want their own independent homeland; the Israelis believe they are fighting for their survival. While Israeli and Palestinian leaders work toward a peaceful compromise, the passions, struggles and bloodshed on the front lines continue.
