When Deng Xiaoping ascended to power in 1978 - 2 years after the death of Mao Zedong and the "smashing" of the "Gang of Four" - China had definitively closed the chapter of the tragic decade-long Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Deng undertook "modernization." On the eve of the 2008 Summer Olympics, China has been transformed beyond anything ever imagined as shown through the images of photographers associated with Contact, recorded over the last thirty years.
