Tickhill, South Yorkshire

Tickhill is a small town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, on the border with Nottinghamshire.
It lies eight miles south of Doncaster, between Maltby and Harworth, on the busy conjunction of the A631 and A60 roads, and adjacent to the A1(M) motorway.
The River Torne passes close to the south-east of the town where it is the boundary between South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, eventually meeting the River Trent.

Notable buildings in Tickhill include the substantial ruins of Tickhill Castle ( a few photos available on this gallery) which contains a private residence leased by the Duchy of Lancaster, St Mary's Church - a large thirteenth century parish church and the buttercross, in the middle of a busy road junction.
The town of Tickhill is recorded in the Domesday book and was an important and strategic town for several hundred years. However as the importance of castles declined and the medieval age got into its stride, Tickhill became much less important.
Today it is a popular residential area about a 30 minute drive from Doncaster and a short distance from the mining town of Maltby.
It is popular with tourists as can be seen from the gift and antique shops. It has a pleasant mill pond with ducks.
There some pleasant walks but one is never far from the sound of the traffic on the busy A1.
Famous residents include Gervase Phinn, the 'James Herriot of Schools'.
The castle is private.
If Tickhill were in Sussex it would be a honey pot village of stone cottages and thatched roofs, but it is on the border of Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire and next to the A1.
