About DAVIN ELLICSON archive

I was born in Massachusetts, USA in 1978, and began taking photographs on a family trip to Europe at the age of 10. I attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, USA, and studied the French language in Paris. It was during this time abroad that I first visited Romania in 2000. Later, I traveled on a Larson Fellowship to Sweden to photograph Saami Reindeer Herders above the Arctic Circle. In 2001 I earned a B.A. in Modern European History.

In 2003, I moved to Romania where I lived and farmed with a peasant family for a year in the Maramures region, the most traditional area of Europe. The photographs from this period form the first part of a long-term project about the transformation of rural life in Eastern Europe as the European Union expands.

In 2006, I completed an M.A. in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication and then moved to Bucharest to pursue stories throughout the Balkan region and to continue my rural life project.

I've completed assignments for The International Herald Tribune, Courrier Japon, Bloomberg News and Intermediair Magazine and also work for various NGOs including Leslie Hawke's Ovidiu Rom in Bucharest. My work has appeared in The New York Times, Der Spiegel, Die Presse, TAZ, DU Magazine, Blueeyes Magazine and the book EAST from the Anzenberger Agency.

I was included in American Photography 23 and received an honorable mention in Jen Bekman's Hey, Hot Shot! Contest and was nominated for PDN's 30 in 2008. Recently, I was also nominated for next year's Joop Swart Masterclass.

I am represented by Wonderful Machine in the US and by Anzenberger everywhere else.
