The NGO Ovidiu Rom was founded by Leslie Hawke (mother of the American actor Ethan Hawke) who first came to Romania in 2000 as a volunteer with the Peace Corps and started her NGO the following year in Bucharest. Ovidiu Rom seeks to help put impoverished Romanian children in school and has helped thousands of children through out reach programs at the village level. The NGO teaches social workers and psychologists to work effectively with poor families, runs year-round educational programs, helps parents monitor their children's progress and provides counseling and emergency aid.

Bucharest based photographer Davin Ellicson accompanied staff as they traveled to a small village outside Bucharest to teach kindergarteners and make house calls encouraging parents to have their children participate in Ovidiu Rom's program.
