Ceausescu and his wife Elena were executed directly following their military trial by firing squad on Christmas day 1989 during the Romanian Revolution.

The country experienced the most oppressive of the former Eastern Bloc's Communist regimes and by the late 1980s shops were empty of food, the imfamous secret police called the Securitate had created a police state and Ceausescu had launched grandisose Communist building projects modeled after North Korea that involved leveling one fifth of historic Bucharest.

Since 2000, Romania has developed rapidly and In 2007 the country joined the European Union. In each of the past three years Romania has experienced 8% economic growth and a middle class is developing fueled by the lending of credit by banks. 2009 though will inevitably see a downturn in economic growth as the worldwide financial crisis hits Eastern Europe.
