August 15, 2009. About two hundred people participated in a rally, march, and demonstration protesting Chevron's Richmond oil refinery renovation and expansion project. About two hundred people participated in a rally, march, and demonstration protesting Chevron's Richmond oil refinery renovation and expansion project. The event was organized by Mobilization for Climate Justice-West, a coalition of over thirty organizations, working to bring awareness to the refinery issue as well as the United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in December in Copenhagen. Event organizers claim that the Richmond refinery project will allow the facility to refine heavier and dirtier crude that will result in more air pollution, greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, and health risks. A court ruling recently put the refinery project on hold saying that further environmental impact reporting was needed.
