The region of Abruzzo is located southeast of the centre of the Italian peninsula and borders the Adriatic on the east and on the west by the Apennines mountain chain. It is one of the most mountainous regions in Italy with the Corno Grande peak in the Gran Sasso massif reaching over 2,900 metres and the highest summit in the Apennines range. In the interior is the extensive Abruzzo National Park, home to chamois, wolves, bears and golden eagles.
