The area around Capua is not the most beautiful in the land, but nevertheless, once you are within the impressive archaeological site, the second largest amphitheatre in Italy, you can level you eyes below the smoke smudged skyline and imagine the cries of horror echoing from the massive walls of the subterranean passageways where many a man and beast passed on their way to meet their doom. Passing through Caserta and close by the fascinations of vibrant Naples with brooding Vesuvius the road reached Benevento with its magnificent Trajan's Arch
