The Ionian island of Cephalonia, or Kefalonia, is located in Western Greece and has become famous as the setting for the book and film of "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". It is located on a major tectonic fault, where the European plate meets the Aegean plate ans was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1953. The devastation was so extensive that very few older buildings still stand although the natural beauty of its landscape and coastline still remains as stunning as ever.

Alonissos is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. After neighbouring Skiathos and Skopelos it is the third member of the Northern Sporades. Alonissos is also the name of a village located on the southern part of the island and known locally as Chora. The island and the village were heavily damaged in the 1965 earthquake and when I visited in 1983 many were still ruined. The subsequent increase in tourism has seen most of these restored for holiday accommodation.
