The Ionian island of Cephalonia, or Kefalonia, is located in Western Greece and has become famous as the setting for the book and film of "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". It is located on a major tectonic fault, where the European plate meets the Aegean plate ans was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1953. The devastation was so extensive that very few older buildings still stand although the natural beauty of its landscape and coastline still remains as stunning as ever.
