Strictly speaking, the phrase "a sense of place" relates to the perception of early American writers having experienced European culture and described the contrast with their developing American fabric. However, it is inevitable that 'a sense of place' should be used in a wider context, although it will always have a special meaning in respect of Italy where antiquity, high culture, classical landscape have combined with a flair for modern design, a way of blending the old and the new and the way in which antiquity still breathes through the pores of modern Italians strutting on an ancient stage. In my own way, I have tried to use black and white film to hint at how this sense is manifested in moments of everyday Italian life
