Eclipsed by its principal city Rome and to the rest of the world chiefly known for its football club, Lazio contains a rich and diverse landscape as well as amazing architecture and the historical monuments of Latium as it was once known. Situated between Tuscany and Campania, it contains places like Viterbo, 'the town of the Popes'. During the Middle Ages, the papacy moved here to escape disorder in the Eternal City, and during the 13th and 14th centuries, the city was the true powerhouse of Christendom. Other places of note are Tarquinia with its Etruscan necropolis, Lake Bolsena, the coastal resorts of Gaeta, Terracina and Sperlonga, and inland the 13 towns of the Castelli Romani, sitting in the Alban Hills. The Colli Albani hills are a big wine growing area, chief among the towns being Frascati, Grottaferrata and Marino, all with their own vintages. Apart from facsinating Palestrina, there are several monasteries to visit such as the one at Subiaco as well as Monte Cassino where my father fought and lost many friends in World War 2
