Normandy, or in French, Normandie, is situated along the English Channel coast of Northern France between Brittany in the west) and Picardy in the east. Normandy, or in French, Normandie, is situated along the English Channel coast of Northern France between Brittany in the west) and Picardy in the east. It is divided into two regions of Basse-Normandie and Haute-Normandie. Upper Normandy (Haute-Normandie) consists of the French departments of Seine-Maritime and Eure. Lower Normandy (Basse-Normandie) contains the departments of Orne, Calvados, and Manche. The former province of Normandy comprised present-day Upper and Lower Normandy, as well as small areas now part of the départements of Eure-et-Loir, Mayenne, and Sarthe. Following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Normandy and England were linked by Norman rulers, but after 1204 the continental territory reverted to France. Basse-Normandie is predominantly agricultural in character, with cattle breeding the most important sector although now in decline. The bocage is a patchwork of small fields with high hedges while Haute-Normandie contains a higher concentration of industry. Principal towns are Alençon, Rouen, Caen, Dieppe, Coutances, Bayeux. Cherbourg and Falaise and Le Havre. Normandy is a significant cider-producing region, and also produces calvados, a distilled cider or apple brandy. Other activities of economic importance are dairy produce, flax, horse breeding, fishing, tourism as well as the output of three French nuclear power stations.
