This series of photographs explores both ancient and modern Italy using the historic roads of the Romans to offer an insight into the fusion of old and new that gives Italy its distinctive character. These routes offer a natural framework to a photographic account of the varied regions of Italy and how they have evolved over many centuries. The roads pass through places which are still some of the most important cultural centres of Roman Italy and so the roads themselves and the topographical and archeological features along their way have great intrinsic interest. The city of Rome is a natural focus of the book as many of the roads converge on the Eternal City.
