It is not possible to make a full visual account of the Eternal City in a short space, indeed as Goethe wrote in "Italian Journey", "To take in even a small part of everything there is to see here would take a lifetime or, rather, the lifetime of many human beings learning from each other in turn" . Instead I offer here a few images that seem to me to evoke the feeling of timelessness a visitor encounters here and to evoke the strong sense of place that the city imparts....

Instead I offer here a few images that seem to me to evoke the feeling of timelessness a visitor encounters here and to evoke the strong sense of place that the city imparts.

And everywhere in Rome there are men of the cloth, people praying or intent upon the business of prayer management, solemnly going about church matters and ecclesiastical bureaucracy. Since Roman times the city has always been a noisy, dirty, busy place, but there is always somewhere to find a quiet spot to consider the passage of time as day follows night repeatedly around the ancient stones. Surrounded by the seven hills of Rome, Tiber Island is one such spot, the place where the Via Salaria once crossed the river to reach the centre of the city. The traffic can still be clearly heard and the sodium streets lights intrude into the gathering darkness but as a winter dusk descends upon the island and the river rushes past to its next port of call washing the ancient crumbling stones of the Ponte Rotto, it is just possible to hear only the noise of the water and to see little more than the silhouettes of the rooftops and trees, perhaps imagining oneself to be living in any one on the number of centuries that have passed since Romulus and Remus suckled the mythical she wolf.
