The Festival of La Salute (Festa della Madonna della Salute) takes place on the 21st of November and celebrates one of the most important religious festivals in Venice. It commemorates the end of the plague of 1630 and takes place at the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute which was built to mark the occasion. The Festival of La Salute (Festa della Madonna della Salute) takes place on the 21st of November and celebrates one of the most important religious festivals in Venice. It commemorates the end of the plague of 1630 and takes place at the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute which was built to mark the occasion. This is tone of the city's best love churches located at the eastern tip of Dorsoduro, with the huge bulk of its dome visible from the waterfront at Piazza San Marco.

The festival dates from 1687, when the reigning Doge swore an oath of gratitude to the Virgin and since then, on the same day, an almost continuous procession of Venetians has moved from Piazza San Marco to the church using a temporary wooden bridge specially constructed over the Grand Canal from Santa Maria del Giglio. Thousands enter the church to light candles as well as to continue the festivities in the Campo della Salute which is taken over by stalls selling the famous frittelle (pastries), torrone (nougat) and toys, as well as candles and other religious paraphernalia.
