Tuscany, or Toscana, is so well known throughout the world that it is hard to avoid photographic cliches when working in this lovely part of Central Italy. The sense of tradition that infuses all departments of Tuscan life is a rich thread to follow, whether in the religious rituals or the more pagan festivities that have gone on for hundreds of years. Tuscany, or Toscana, is so well known throughout the world that it is hard to avoid photographic cliches when working in this lovely part of Central Italy. The sense of tradition that infuses all departments of Tuscan life is a rich thread to follow, whether in the religious rituals or the more pagan festivities that have gone on for hundreds of years. Florence, Siena, Pisa, Piacenza, Volterra, San Gimignano and Lucca have all seduced my eye along with numerous other beautiful towns and landscapes. However, I am also drawn to some of the less beautiful places, Viareggio and the northern Tuscan coast, the gritty outskirts of Pisa, industrial Piombino and some of the sombre towns of the Alpi Apuane and the heavily quarried marble bearing mountains around Carrara.
