Small Suburban Backyard

This long but shallow backyard in a suburb east of Seattle incorporates a dining patio, a small but meticulous lawn, a dry streambed, and plantings for year-round interest in a small backyard space just 35 feet deep x 135 feet long, roughly one tenth of an acre. This long but shallow backyard in a suburb east of Seattle incorporates a dining patio, a small but meticulous lawn, a dry streambed, and plantings for year-round interest in a small backyard space just 35 feet deep x 135 feet long, roughly one tenth of an acre. Following an addition to the home, the landscape designers used elevation changes to carve the space into two distinct areas: the lower area close to the house for entertaining; and the upper, more hidden area for strolling and enjoying the garden. Care was taken to match materials on the existing patio and foundation facade, and a Zen-like design incorporates the Japanese maples and dry streambed filled with river rock and offers peaceful views from the new family room.
