Images of Animals in Captivity - (WILD)

Where the human and animal worlds meet, there are moments of soulful connection, heartrending beauty, and dire contrast. In exploring the aesthetics of animals in manmade environments, I have become captivated by the captives. Again and again I return to their enclosures to experience their emotions, character, and power. The empathy I have developed looking through the lens is not only for the animals, but for the part of me that longs for freedom and authenticity. So I have set out to be a witness, protector, and--when I am lucky--a playmate to these ambassadors of the wild.
A great storyteller once said that the first rule of storytelling is to love the story you tell. I choose my subjects because of the joy, awe, and heartache I feel with animals. My photographs are their stories. In sharing the images I retell their tale, in a visual tradition, one that I hope will inspire us to reconnect with the wild, inside and out. In this one life, I believe we are all living constrained, endangered...we are all (WILD).
These images were taken at animal rescue facilities, wildlife parks, and zoos around the United States. I am not anti-zoo, simply pro-animal. I encourage everyone to support these ambassadors of the Wild.
