Canada's west coast belongs to British Columbia and extends from the southern tip of Vancouver Island north to the border of Alaska. Though only 965 km (600 mi) in direct distance, there are over 25,000 km (15,000 mi) of coastline, 5000 km more than Canada?s north and east coasts combined. This is due to the deep fjords and over 40,000 islands that dot the coast.

While most of the 40,000 islands are uninhabited, some of the larger islands, such as the Queen Charlotte Islands (now officially known as Haida Gwaii) and Vancouver Island, contain a significant portion of BC's population. Victoria, British Columbia?s capital city, is found at the southern end of Vancouver Island.
