Botanical Beach on Vancouver Island, is one of the most amazing places on the entire west coast of Canada, particularly at low tide. Here you will find tide pools filled with a seemingly infinite number of brightly coloured marine animals. Orange, red and purple starfish, sea urchins, white gooseneck barnacles, blue mussels, sea cucumbers, and green sea anemones are only a few of the intertidal species found at Botanical Beach.
This area is so significant that a research station was established here in 1900 by the University of Minnesota. Due to the difficulty of accessing the region in those early years, the station was closed in 1907. Botanical Beach was protected as a BC Provincial Park in 1989.
