The Sooke Potholes, located on the Sooke River near Victoria, is a beautiful area known by locals and visitors alike for its clear swimming holes. In Autumn, the river is home to a large and productive run of Coho and Chinook salmon. This spectacular river and the surrounding land was protected in 2005 and is now a part of Vancouver Island's Sea to Sea Green Belt that stretches from Saanich Inlet to the Sooke Basin. The Potholes were formed about 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age. As the retreating glaciers melted, massive torrents of meltwater carved a path deep into the bedrock. Large boulders, carried by the glaciers, became trapped and were swirled against the canyon walls, carving out the potholes that can be seen today.
