British Columbia is home to five species of Pacific salmon. Each year, the streams and rivers of coastal BC come alive with the return of chinook, coho, sockeye, pink and chum salmon to spawn.
After spending the first part of their lives in the streams where they hatched, the salmon move to salt water where they spend two to seven years maturing in the nutrient-rich waters of the Pacific Ocean. When the time comes to spawn, the salmon, guided largely by smell, may travel thousands of kilometres to return to the rivers and streams from where they came.
