Much of the resulting 1690-kilometer highway runs along Vietnam's jungle interior along the borders with Laos and Cambodia, often on top or alongside the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a network of trails used by North Vietnamese soldiers and Viet Cong guerillas to secretly move supplies during the American War.
