Hong Kong's poverty divide is most evident in the forgotten elderly poor. Many of them have been left behind in the modernazation and new economy as they lack the skills and knoweledge to find their place in the new world. Surviving off of meager goverment pensions and charity. their plight often goes unseen or ignored by society.
Many of the elderly poor are rural imigrants from main land China. Today's imigrants come from many other far off lands as well. They face their own sets of challenges however. Legitimate work is hard to find for a non Western imigrant, such as those from Nepal, Pakistan, India, Ghana, and other nations. Racism, legal issues, and social stigmas all play a role in stacking the odds against them.
The Chungking Mansions rest on the stylish Nathan Road in Kowloon. Home to some of the worlds most upscale shops. However, the Mansions are a world unto themselves. Cavernous alleyways, stairways, and one of the most diverse populations in the world make up this living and breathing building that serves as a home away from home for many of the imigrants.
