180 children and their families call Ung Buu Cancer hospital in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) home any and every given day. Vietnam currently only has 2 cancer hospitals to serve the entire country, forcing cancer victims from around the country to travel to either Saigon or Hanoi for their treatment. Vietnam currently only has 2 cancer hospitals to serve the entire country, forcing cancer victims from around the country to travel to either Saigon or Hanoi for their treatment. The child and their family will make the hospital their home for the entire duration of their treatment, however long that may be. Unfortuanetly, with only 2 hospitals, conditions could not be expected to be anything but overcrowded, understaffed, and lacking the nessecary resources.
While many cancer victims through out the world would scoff at the thought of taking their chemo therapy on the ground, sleeping underneath of beds becasue of a lack of room and cramped living conditions, or sharing an open aired unit with 20 other patients and their families, to the average Vietnamese, there are no other options and spots in the hospital are incredibely valuable and sought after.
