In 1979 the world community became aware of the genocide of nearly 2 million Cambodian citizens by the Pol Pet led Khmer Rouge regime. The North Vietnamese army was overthrowing the Khmer Rouge and starving and sick refugees were fleeing to the border area with Thailand. These photographs won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1980.
