Stonehenge was built on a bluff above the Columbia River Gorge near Biggs, Washington, by Quaker pacifist Sam Hill as the first monument in the United States to honor the memory of soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. It was envisioned as a full-scale replica of the prehistoric monument located in England by Hill, who mistakenly believe that the original Stonehenge had been used as a sacrificial site, and wanted the reinforced concrete replica to remind visitors that ''humanity is still being sacrificed to the god of war.''
The monument, inaugurated in 1918 and finished twelve years later, originally stood at the center of Maryhill, a Quaker community abandoned after a fire destroyed most of the buildings. Sam Hill died in 1931 and is buried in a secluded spot at the bottom of the bluff near the river, following his wish to be left alone.
