The Palouse region, in southeastern Washington, where since 1870, 94% of the grasslands and 97% of the wetlands have been converted to crops, hay, or pasture. The Palouse is a major world producer of wheat and offers a landscape of rolling hills supporting contour agriculture, a relief reminiscent of northern Italy.
