The shoreline is many things to many people. For me, it is more than a timeless and beautiful amalgamation of water, sand and rocks. As if that isn't enough. It is also an evergrowing collection of the personal and communal experiences I enjoy in these public places.
My early interest in photography evolved around surfing - pointing my lens out to sea at the fluid (and frantic) slicing of water by fibreglass clad foam. Thankgod for the petrochemical industry.
At some stage in the late 1970's I looked away from the horizon and along the shoreline and 'discovered' the segments and details of beaches and ocean baths. I guess it was the beginning of my life as I know it - even if I didn't know it then.
My commercial work demands a 'complete' picture with everything fully explained and 'on message'. Personal pictures like these are less defined - I hope to involve the viewer with their own interpretations, memories and experiences.
These segments are glimpses of the ephemeral details of where the sea meets land. I am lucky I can still enjoy this meshing of textures. Luckier still to have learnt how I act today helps decide how far inland that surging of foam over sand will be for those who follow.
