Floodplain forests represent between 3-4% of the Amazon Basin area. A part are known as varzea, where the "white" muddy water (agua-branca) flood the riverside in the rainy season. In the dry season these lands are hightly productive and propitious for agriculture. Another important part is the igapo, flooded forest of the dark waters (agua preta), with less-productive lands, fishing hunting orientated ecosystems.
