Itzhak Kalter, 1903-1997


Itzhak Kalter, the younger brother of architect and photographer Ya'acov Benor-Kalter, arrived in Palestine in 1925 when his older brother was already well known. He worked as a surveyor until 1930 when he enrolled as a student in an architectural school, deciding finally to become a self-trained architectural photographer. His first major client was the well-known architect Mendelsohn who used Kalter's photographs in preference over those of an American photographer he had brought to Palestine. After this introduction, Kalter was offered work by leading architects of the following decades - Neufeld, Barkai, Rechter and others. In the period of the 1930s and 1940s his photographs of Bauhaus-style buildings are extensive and well known.
