Uighurs (also spelled Uyghurs) are a Turkic ethnic group living in Eastern and Central Asia. Today Uighurs live primarily in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in China. Politically, there has been an independence movement since 1933 to create a new sovereign state known as Chinese Turkistan. In contrast to the majority of China, Uighurs are muslim and recent developments with Beijing's aggressive migration policies have triggered more violent clashes between Han Chinese and Uighurs.
