Ornithopod and Theropod Dinosaur Tracks in the Dakota Sandstone. These tracks were made on a coastal plain beside the Western Interior Seaway during the Cretaceous period, about 100 million years ago. The ornithopods were quadrapedal herbavores, about 20-30 feet long. The smaller theropods were bipedal carnivores. No bones were recovered at this site so it was not possible for paleontologists to identify particular species of ornithopod or theropod. The large number of tracks and showing that several animals were moving in the same general directions suggests that these dinosaurs traveled in small groups. Dinosaur Ridge National Natural Landmark. Near Morrison, Jefferson Co., Colo.
