Former Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, was assassinated by an unknown gunman/suicide bomber after a campaign rally on 27 December, 2007, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Twenty people were also killed in the subsequent explosion. Controversy still surrounds the cause of Bhutto's death and with those who committed the crime. Al-Qaeda commander Mustafa Abu al-Yazid claimed responsibility for the attack, while the Pakistani government linked Pakistan Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud, with the killings. Since her death, Pakistan has slipped further into crisis with attacks occurring on a daily basis as the Taliban takes over more land in northern Pakistan and continues their assault on government and military installations with relative impunity.
