Glendale, California, February 18, 2011 - A view of the Golden Key Hotel from the smoking area outside Barnes and Noble Booksellers at Americana at Brand. The Golden Key Hotel is surrounded on three sides by the Americana at Brand outdoor shopping mall. The Americana is looking to expand into the space where the hotel sits. The City Council is set to vote on Tuesday on the proposed expansion. City Council officials have said that if they can't cut a deal with the hotel owner, the city will likely use its eminent domain powers to seize the property.The Americana at Brand is owned by real estate developer Caruso Affiliated, which also owns The Grove at Farmers Market in Los Angeles. It is an open space shopping complex and living facility, with 75 retail shops, 19 restaurants,100 condominiums and 238 apartments and an animated fountain. .
