Residents of Millinocket, Maine, flock to a carnival on the outskirts of town on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The carnival aimed to raise money for the Millinocket Performing Arts Boosters, which plans on sending local show choir students to Disney World this summer for to put on a performance in the park — an opportunity that fundraising officer Allison Kelly says is often the children's first chance to travel outside the state of Maine. The collapse of the paper industry has left thousands of area residents unemployed and has created a budgetary crisis for the town government, leaving schools, libraries, and emergency services underfunded. On Thursday, June 19, parts and machinery from the mill, including the paper machine, were auctioned off to settle tax debts.
