Horse Racing - Behind the Scenes at the Kentucky Derby
Protective vests hang in the starter's office at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Start crews are required to wear the vests for protection due to their working in close contact with the animals while loading them in the gates. Thoroughbred race horses are known to be tempermental and powerful and can cause serious injury. Start crews work seasonally and are busy during Triple Crown season which includes the Kentucky Derby.
