Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse on Roanoke Island, Outer Banks, North Carolina. This is an exterior replica of the 1877 Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse that was located at the southern entrance of Croatan Sound, halfway between Wanchese and the NC mainland. The original 1857 screwpile lighthouse that aided mariners in Croatan Sound was a cottage built over the water, with the lighthouse serving as both beacon and residence. It was decommissioned in 1955, and lost in the Sound during an attempt to move it to private property. ..
