The women at the Gonakbari Women’s centre have become paralysed in several ways: whether from illness, accidents, or violence they are often seen as a burden by their families and can be rejected. At the centre they receive vocational training in an activity that is suitable to their abilities and condition, this helps them to reintegrate their families and be perceived as worthy members...Location: Gonakbari women’s centre, Savar, Dhaka....In the suburbs of Dhaka, Bangladesh there is an organisation called CRP (Centre for the rehabilitation of the paralysed) that is giving new hope to the country’s disabled. Founded more than twenty years ago by Valerie Taylor, CRP’s coordinator, the centre looks after people from all walks of life. Rich and poor alike are brought in to receive treatment after an accident or an injury that would normally spell permanent disability. Thanks to the help and treatment they receive many of the patients are able to pursue their lives almost normally. By learning new skills during their stay at the centre they are able to support themselves and are no longer seen as a burden by their families. ..In addition the centre has a section for children with special needs, a women’s section and a university for training future physiotherapists and occupational therapists to degree standard...My overall impression of this organisation was a very positive one. The environment was pleasant and uplifting despite some of the patients’ suffering. The volunteers worked  harmoniously with the local staff, sharing their expertise and developing useful projects...Photographer: Andrew Wheeler
