The Bishnoi is a sect residing in parts of Rajasthan and hariyana in India.They are mainly farmers and are well known as the protectors of the environment.

A BISHNOI will not hesitate to put his life in danger if he sees a wild animal being poached or trees being cut.Each year many Bishnois lay down their lives in struggle with hunters and poachers.They are also known to be very violent in protecting the sacred deer and often kill people involved in destruction of environment in their villages and places of stay.

Owing to this one finds the Bishnoi villages are like massive green patches teeming with wild life in the middle of the Thar desert.
There are often conflicts with nomadic tribes like Bhils and Sansi as they depend upon hunted animals as the only source of food because they have no farm lands to grow crop.
