  • A girl carries a reproduction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a painting which adorns the walls of a great many homes in Medellín and the Aburrá Valley, and also the Department of Antioquia. The presence of the cult of the Sacred Heart is an indicator of the conservative values od Antioquians - it was promoted by the Catholic Church and the Conservative Party at the end of the 19th Century as a symbolic 'shield' against aethism and communism. • Displaced families return to Cacarica, from where they were displaced by a joint Colombian military & paramilitary offensive three years previously. Their return marked the founding of the Peace Community of Cacarica. The Peace Communities are a strategy to allow civilian communities to remain on their lands which are in conflict zones. All their members pledge neutrality in the conflict, which means not collaborating with any armed grouping, including the State military forces. This policy of neutrality has often made the communities' members targets of the Army and paramilitary groups, who accuse the communities of collaborating with the guerrillas.
