  • SERAING, BELGIUM - APRIL-23-2005 - Fifty years ago Liege, Belgium was at the epicenter of Europe's steel industry. But as new, cleaner and less expensive technologies emerge the old ways of doing things slowly die out. Such is the case at the Arcelor steel mill in the village of Seraing, Belgium just outside of Liege. After 50 years of service, blast furnace number 6 at the Arcelor steel plant was permanently shutdown on Tuesday April 26, 2005. The last remaining blast furnace at the plant will be closed in 2009, marking the end of an era in Europe's steel industry. For the workers, this means either being re-assigned or re-trained and some will be asked to take early retirement. Since the laws protecting workers are much stronger in Europe than in the U.S. - it is usually less expensive for a company to re-train workers rather than terminating their employment.
