  • June 25, 2008, Camp Iridimi, Iriba, Chad...A a boy sits in a tree in the middle of the Darfur refugee camp Iridimi...The law of the land states that no tree shall be cut down. This law has not always been respected, especially over the last four years when 250,000 refugees fled from Sudan's troubled Darfur region to eastern Chad. Twice a day, a truck has to travel some 60 kilometers outside the camps, sometimes crossing the border into Sudan, to fetch firewood for the refugees. The rapid influx of people has contributed to the desertification of the northern Sahel region and poses a serious environmental hazard as the Sahara advances 5 to 10 kilometers every year. It is estimated that within one year, firewood sources will be exhausted in Eastern Chad. With rainy seasons proving to be shorter and shorter each year, the prospects are not looking good. 80 percent of Chad's population depends on subsistance farming. By photographer Anne Holmes
