  • Carlos Arredondo is pictured at Camp Casey in Crawford, Texas on April 15, 2006. In 2004, on Mr. Arredondo?s 44th birthday, U.S. Marines informed him of the combat-related death of his 20-year-old son Alex in Iraq. Mr. Arredondo set himself on fire inside the Marine Corps van, leading to second and third degree burns and a threat of criminal prosecution, which did not occur. Mr. Arredondo sufficiently recovered from his burns to attend his son's funeral on a stretcher and has since apologized. Mr. Arredondo, who became a U.S. citizen in 2006, now travels the country with photographs of Alex, a replica of his coffin, and copies of his final letter home.<br />

Mr. Arredondo was knocked to the ground and kicked by several men at this demonstration. Less than two weeks later, an unknown individual or group of individuals defaced Alex?s grave in Massachusetts. By photographer Geoffrey King

  • Don Anderson, a paraplegic Vietnam veteran, participates in a ?die-in? against the war in Iraq in front of the United States Capitol on September 15, 2007 in Washington DC. Mr. Anderson, an antiwar activist who traveled to Washington from Lebanon, Oregon, is still trying to secure compensation from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs for the 1975 VA medical staff error that left him disabled. Shortly after this photograph was taken, a Capitol Police officer reportedly used a chemical spray on Mr. Anderson, who was carried away and treated by other demonstrators.
