  • SHOT 2/13/2004 - Sonja Becker of Denver, Co. puts the finishing touches on her Standard Poodle's groomed tail while posing the dog for a portrait session. "Crystal" is a three year-old Standard Poodle whose silver color is much more unusual than the normal black and white version of the breed. The grooming of the dogs was originally intended to keep the water retriever's vital body parts warm while still allowing the dog to swim more easily but the dog show circuits have taken the grooming and shaping to the extreme. The Rocky Mountain Cluster dog show is one of the largest dog shows in the West and features 162 different breeds of dogs and draws close to 4,000 canines a day. The four day long event is held cooperatively between the Plum Creek Kennel Club and the Colorado Kennel Club. • SHOT 2/13/2004 - "Cappy", a one year-old male Afghan Hound shows off some of the distintive coloration and long, shaggy hair covering a good portion of his face Friday. The breed was discovered by the Western world in the hills of Afghanistan in the 19th century and is a sight hound originally used to hunt for larger game such as snow leopards according to his owner, Deborah Ridley of Granite Canyon, Wyo. Ridley said it was his first big show and that he has a bit more fur than an adult Afghan because he's still a puppy. • SHOT 2/18/08 3:19:37 PM - Portraits of various dogs at the 13th Annual Rocky Mountain Cluster dog show at the National Western Complex in Denver, Co. "Reedy Rose", an eight month old female Afghan Hound won the title of Winner's Bitch in her very first show and is owned by Kammie LaRose of Colorado Springs, Co. The Afghan Hound is a very old sighthound dog breed. Distinguished by its thick, fine, silky coat and its tail with a ring curl at the end, the breed acquired its unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan, where it was originally used to hunt wolves, foxes, and gazelles. Its local name is T?z?. Other alternate names for this breed are Balkh Hound, Baluchi Hound, Barutzy Hound and Kabul Hound. The breed was always thought to date back at least to the pre-Christian era, and recent discoveries by researchers studying ancient DNA have revealed that the Afghan Hound is in fact one of the most ancient dog breeds, dating back for many thousands of years. The temperament of the typical Afghan Hound can be aloof and dignified, but happy and clownish when playing. The dog show features some of the top show dogs in the country and showcases close to 200 different breeds. Some 3,500 dogs and some of the top handlers in the country compete at the event which follows on the heels of Westminster. In a conformation show, judges familiar with specific dog breeds evaluate individual dogs for how well they conform to published breed standards. Conformation shows are also referred to as dog shows or breed shows. Conformation shows are typically held under the auspices of a national kennel club. At the highest levels are Championship or all-breed shows, which have separate classes for the majority of breeds.(Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2008) By photographer Marc Piscotty

  • SHOT 2/18/08 2:45:05 PM - Portraits of various dogs at the 13th Annual Rocky Mountain Cluster dog show at the National Western Complex in Denver, Co. "Andy", a four year old male Puli shows off the long braided cords indicative of the breed. "Andy" is owned by Carol Zamperini and Mary Carol Jenn both of Denver, Co. He was Best of Breed for three days straight and is already a champion. The Puli is a medium-small breed of dog known for its long, corded coat and was the dog of Hungarian peasants. The tight curls of the coat, similar to dreadlocks, make it virtually waterproof. The Puli is a solid colored dog that can be black, white, gray or a cream color, "fako" in Hungary. The Puli is an ancient sheep dog of Hungary, introduced by the migration of the Magyars from Central Asia in the Middle Ages. Nomadic shepherds of the Hungarian plains valued their herding dogs, paying as much as a year's salary for a Puli. In Asia, the breed goes back 2000 years and anecdotal evidence suggests a Puli-like dog existed 6000 years ago. This breed is possibly the ancestor of the modern Poodle. Puliks are very intelligent, have excellent agility, are obedient and athletic. They are also fabulous herding dogs. They get attached to their owner and can be wary of strangers. The dog show features some of the top show dogs in the country and showcases close to 200 different breeds. • SHOT 2/18/08 10:41:01 AM - Portraits of various dogs at the 13th Annual Rocky Mountain Cluster dog show at the National Western Complex in Denver, Co. "Speedy", a three year-old male English Bulldog, owned by Rod Peterson of Brighton, Co. Peterson breeds bulldogs through Greatrock Bulldogs and said "Speedy" is well on his way to a Championship. The Bulldog, colloquially known as the English Bulldog or British Bulldog, is a medium-size breed of dog that originated in England. The temperament of the Bulldog is generally docile, friendly and gregarious but are known to be fiercely loyal and occasionally willful. In the 1600s, bulldogs were used for bullbaiting (as well as bearbaiting), a wagering sport popular in the 17th century in which trained bulldogs leapt at a bull lashed to a post, latched onto its snout and attempted to suffocate it. Bulldogs have many distinct characteristics that were breed into them so they would be better suited to bullbaiting. The dog show features some of the top show dogs in the country and showcases close to 200 different breeds. • SHOT 2/18/08 11:22:03 AM - Portraits of various dogs at the 13th Annual Rocky Mountain Cluster dog show at the National Western Complex in Denver, Co. "Andi" is a two year-old female Bedlington Terrier owned by Ron and Sharon Kercher of Byer, Co. She has already earned her Championship and the couple has four of the dogs. The Bedlington Terrier is a breed of terrier named after the mining town of Bedlington, Northumberland in North East England. The Bedlington Terrier is often described as looking like a lamb on a leash, probably because it has non-shedding fur with a woolly texture. These dogs may be blue, sandy, or liver, and can be solid colours or have tan markings. This breed has a wedge-shaped head with sparkling eyes. Although it looks meek when reclining on the couch, the Bedlington Terrier is argumentative and every inch a terrier when angered. Bedlington Terriers are groomed with patches of fur on their heads and ears. This practice is thought to have originated when the Bedlington was used to hunt rats. The rats, trying to escape, would bite at the dog's ears or tail, saving them from an injury and possible death from an infection. The dog show features some of the top show dogs in the country and showcases close to 200 different breeds. • SHOT 2/18/08 12:01:15 PM - Portraits of various dogs at the 13th Annual Rocky Mountain Cluster dog show at the National Western Complex in Denver, Co. "Axel", a three year old male Doberman Pinscher lets out a big yawn while being photographed. "Axel" is owned by Shelley Voorhees of Centennial, Co. and is a show Champion. The Doberman Pinscher (alternatively spelled Dobermann in many countries) or Doberman is a breed of domestic dog. Doberman Pinschers are among the most common of pet breeds, and the breed is well known as an intelligent, alert, and loyal companion dog. Although once commonly used as guard dogs, watch dogs, or police dogs, this is less common today. Doberman Pinschers typically have a deep, broad chest, and a powerful, compact, and square muscular body of medium size. Doberman Pinschers were first bred in Germany around 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann. Dobermann was a tax collector who frequently traveled through many bandit-infested areas, and needed a protection dog to guard him in any situation that might arise. He set out to breed a new type of dog that, in his opinion, would be the perfect combination of strength, loyalty, intelligence, and ferocity. The breed is believed to have been created from several different breeds of dogs that had the characteristics that Dobermann was looking for, including the Pinscher, the Beauceron, the Rottweiler, the Thuringian Shepherd Dog, the black Greyhound, the Great Dane, the Weimaraner, the German Shorthaired Pointer, the Manchester Terrier and the German Shepherd Dog. • SHOT 2/18/08 1:15:48 PM - Portraits of various dogs at the 13th Annual Rocky Mountain Cluster dog show at the National Western Complex in Denver, Co. "Edward", a 21 month old male Basset Hound looks up towards his owner. "Edward" is owned by Christina Wanamaker of Loveland, Co. and she said "he's my little clown". He was wearing a protective covering to prevent his ears from being damaged. The Basset Hound is a short-legged breed of dog of the hound family. They are scent hounds, bred to hunt by scent. Their sense of smell for tracking is second only to that of the Bloodhound. The name Basset derives from the French word "bas" meaning "low;" "basset" (-et attenuating suffix) meaning, literally, "rather low." The Basset Hound is often considered a friendly breed. Bassets are friendly and welcome the opportunity to make new friends. Basset Hounds are a breed of French lineage, a descendant of the St. Hubert's Hound, a dog similar to the present-day Bloodhound. Friars of St. Hubert's Abbey in medieval France desired a shorter-legged dog, capable of following a scent under brush in thick forests, as hunting was a classic sport of the time. Both Bassets and St. Hubert's Hounds were bred to trail, not kill, their game. Bassets were originally used to hunt rabbits and hare. • SHOT 2/18/08 12:29:39 PM - Portraits of various dogs at the 13th Annual Rocky Mountain Cluster dog show at the National Western Complex in Denver, Co. "Bruce", a 15 month old male Hairless Chinese Crested owned and shown by Gary and Serena Galloway of Loveland, Co. puts on his best ferocious look. The Chinese Crested Dog is a smaller (10-13 lbs) breed of dog known for its unusual appearance and entertaining personality. It is a member of the toy dog group. Two types can be born in the same litter; the Hairless and the Powderpuff. Chinese Cresteds tend to be affectionate, energetic and playful. They are considered great family pets, with endearing personalities. Early Chinese Cresteds may have been valued as ratters (ratcatchers), both on ships and in agricultural communities, though such traits are rarely evident in the breed today. The breed has also been called the Chinese Edible Dog, the Chinese Hairless Dog, the Chinese Ship Dog, the Chinese Royal Dog. Recent DNA has established that the dog is of African origin and shares genes with the Basenji. The winner of the 2007 World's Ugliest Dog Contest held at the Sonoma-Marin county fair in California was a Chinese Crested-Chihuahua mixed breed dog.
