  • BINCHE, BELGIUM - FEB-24-2004 - The Carnival of Binche was recently recognized by UNESCO as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity". With roots going back to the Middle Ages, Binche's famed celebration ranks as one of Europe's oldest surviving street carnivals. The carnival culminates on Mardi Gras when the legendary Gille characters make their dramatic appearance. The day starts at 2 a.m. with the Gilles getting dressed in their homes and then parading through the streets collecting followers and stopping at the homes of other Gilles for snacks of raw oysters and champagne, before descending in mass on the town square. The Huangpu River, links Shanghai to the East China Sea and the mouth of the Yangtze River, a major inland waterway. From there boats can travel north to Beijing via the Grand Canal.   • KATHMANDU, NEPAL- A young boy walks past a funeral payer seemingly unaware of the cremation ceremony, an ordinary occurrence in this ancient culture. Devout Hindus make a ritual of bathing and worshiping in the holy waters of the Baghmati River. The Pashupatinath Temple, on the banks of the Baghmati River, is the holiest Hindu Temple in Nepal. It is here that the faithful come to die and be cremated so that they may attain salvation. By photographer Jock Fistick

  • BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - JULY-25-2003 - Refugee children from Afghanistan fight for handouts from the Red Cross. Many have lived in Belgium with their families, for five years or more in a state of limbo waiting for their asylum applications to be considered. Due to the recent demise of the Taliban in Afghanistan, the Belgian government handed down a blanket decision saying that a group of about 1,100 Afghan refugees would have to return to their homeland. In protest the refugees gathered in the Saint Croix Catholic church in Brussels, and staged a hunger strike. By photographer Jock Fistick

  • CALAIS , FRANCE - 11-12-2002 - Refugees from Afghanistan and Iraq , who are trying to cross the channel tunnel to England, make their way by night from Calais to the outskirts of the city where they sleep in old WWII bunkers because the refugee camp in Sangatte has been closed by French authorities. The closing of the refugee camp stemmed from an agreement between the French and British governemnts in an effort to stop the flow of illegal immigrants crossing the channel tunnel.   • HAVANA, CUBA - Hungry and tired, Cuban rafters were ready to be towed back to Havana by an American yachtsman when he found them floating eight miles off the Cuban coast. They had been floating in the Florida Straits for five days. In the summer of 1994 Cubans once again began taking to the water, attempting to escape the oppression of Fidel Castro's government. Many tried, but few made the treacherous journey across the Florida Straights. By photographer Jock Fistick

  • CALCUTTA, INDIA  - A sick child lies on a cot at Mother Teresa's Home for the Dying in Calcutta, India. The Missions of Charity operate this center in Calcutta to care for the elderly and sick. Most of the patients are homeless and sufer from malnutrition and Tuberculosis. Much of the work is done by volunteers who travel to Calcutta from around the world.
