"Sport can change a person's future, as well as that of a nation," says UNICEF Representative in Costa Rica Mr. Seija Toro.

Since 2007 UNICEF Costa Rica organise a national football competition under the theme ,,A goal against adversity". In 2009 on June 13, 180 kids in the age from 12 to 16 from families with few economic resources and poor communities came together to San José, capital of Costa Rica to participate in the third Presidential Delegates Tournament. The event was held to promote child and adolescent rights, especially for children who are victims of abuse or exclusion. This year for the first time there are two girls team participating in the competition.

Ingrid from Port Limón says "Football isn't just for guys. Girls are talented and capable too. What we need is a chance to play."

14 year old Ingrid lives in the barrio San Cristobal in Port Limón at the Atlantic coast. She lives at home with her two sisters and one brother and visits first grade in secondary school. To earn a little extra money she dresses hair of people in the neighborhood. Her barrio is one of the economic poorest areas in the country. Many people don't have a job, street crime is common even during daylight and there is few social trust among the people. But the kids have a strong thing en between them, everybody love playing football. Also more and more girls meet to play.
