  • Basic training soldiers  in 2nd Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, Bravo Company, at Fort Jackson, S.C., begin the patrol phase of the  Military Operations on Urban Terrain exercise, also called MOUT.  The exercise which is meant to simulate clearing an Iraqi village which is occupied by civilians and insurgents is conducted with basic training soldiers from another company portraying the roles of the residents.  For this exercise soldiers are equipped with the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System, or MILES, to simulate casualties. By photographer Brett Flashnick

As part of the weapons immersion modifications to basic training, soldiers were issued M16-A2 rifles after their second week of training.  The soldiers are required to carry their rifles, or leave them under the watch of their battle buddy at all times, except during sleep hours when they are locked on a rack in the soldiers barracks.   • The ES2 (Every Soldier a Sensor) video game software, sponsored by the Department of the army intelligence office, called G-2, is being tested at Fort Jackson, in Columbia S.C., to determine if the software enhances the training of new soldiers.  ES2, is designed to increase a soldiers situational awareness, to be able to recognize threats such as roadside bombs.  The software uses a patrol in an urban area like Baghdad or Fallujah.
