HIV in Portugal by Miguel R Fernandes(34 images)
They were all caught by surprise. Never expected such a diagnosis, being the carriers of HIV. Almost all thought being infected was impossible. In their minds they never had risk behaviors. In general they have an idea that the responsibility of the infection isn't theirs, but from the "other". The "other" is a husband, boyfriend, a father, a mother and even doctors,...

 • A – HIV positive at 83

He knew he was HIV positive a dozen years back. He doesn’t know exactly when he was infected and how, but we had already 70 years when the diagnostic was presented to him. Besides the age he has been capable of resisting the virus, his last stay in the hospital was provoked by a respiratory infection, mostly because of age, not due to the virus, according to the doctors. He’s married for 60 years, he says with a smile on his face, but the wife wasn’t infected. By photographer VIA - Visuals

 • Luís – an example of courage

He says he’s 102 years old, and sometimes he even looks like, but he’s in fact 51. Activist, working as a volunteer for the rights of HIV positive, committed to help others. He doesn’t know when or how he got the virus that lives with him at least since 1996, the year he found out. His first reaction was to call all his partners telling them about the infection and he still remembers the sense of relief of knowing that none of them were infected. “Now I can die in peace” By photographer VIA - Visuals
Isabel knew she was HIV positive in 1989 with 19 years old. Now with 41 she lives in celibate. For her the guilt and shame is inherent. • Leonor – the angry resistant

Leonor is 53 but her skinny bones and the disease make her look much more.
Even so she loves to pose for the photograph, that probably happens because she used to be a model.
All her anger goes to her dead husband, the one that infected her.
He’s dead for 12 or 13 years, but never told her what was his disease.
She only found out by her doctor when she had her diagnosis.
She’s ashamed of the disease and keeps telling people that her problem is diabetes.
Due to opportunist infections she has had numerous complications, toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis and was already in a coma, weighting 30 kg. By photographer VIA - Visuals
